The walking umbrella has a fixed, non-collapsible length of 80 to 90 cm and a continuous shaft - it is carried open or closed like a walking stick. The pocket umbrella, on the other hand, is collapsible: 3-fold constructions measure 28 to 32 cm long when closed, 5-fold ultra-mini models even 20 to 25 cm. This means the pocket umbrella fits in a briefcase, rucksack side pocket or handbag, while the walking umbrella finds no place there. When open, both types reach comparable diameters between 95 and 120 cm. Rule of thumb: walking umbrella for reception situations and corporate appearances with representative aspirations, pocket umbrella for business travellers, onboarding kits and give-aways that are carried in everyday life.
The dual automatic - often abbreviated in the trade as AOC (Auto-Open-Close) - opens and closes the umbrella at one button press each. On opening the umbrella springs up itself by spring tension, on closing the mechanism pulls the ribs back together (the actual stowing in the protective cover remains manual). The advantage shows immediately in everyday life: briefcase in one hand, mobile or coffee cup in the other - the umbrella can still be operated. Yes in principle, but with limitations. Compact adult pocket umbrellas can be operated well by older children from around 10 years upwards, particularly the 5-fold ultra-mini models with their low weight. For younger children, we explicitly recommend child-appropriately sized models such as the FARE 4Kids pocket umbrella (FA6002) with windproofi construction, blunt tips on the rib ends and low overall weight – standard safety for family campaigns and nursery kit. For dedicated school, nursery or children's corporate kit, separate children's umbrella categories with reflective elements and bright colours are the better choice – contact us directly for this, we put together ranges by age target group.
The most important principle: do not stuff into the cover immediately after rain. Open the umbrella after getting wet at home or in the office and let it dry open - ideally leaned slightly against the heater or wall so that water drains from the panels. Anyone who puts the wet umbrella folded into the cover risks damp spots on the canopy and rust at the rib connections within a few weeks. The push-button mechanism should be occasionally lubricated with a drop of sewing machine or gun oil if opening becomes sluggish. For dirt on the canopy, lukewarm water with mild washing-up liquid is sufficient - no washing machine, no bleach, that would destroy the water-repellenti finish. If ribs are visibly damaged, repair is not worthwhile, replacement is more economical.
