What the Chef jacket properties really mean
So you can decide with confidence: here we explain the five most important product characteristics of chef jackets in detail - with meaning, sensible applications and concrete buying tips for restaurant, hotel, canteen, bakery and catering.
Closure system
How quickly the jacket can be taken off when soiled
The closure decides on the daily handling: the classic double button row is the fine-dining standard with a quiet look and top wash resistance because no plastic parts go through the wash. Press studs allow quick changes between two shifts and are low-bacteria. Poppers snap closures separate the jacket in one pull in case of heavy soiling - important in front-cooking situations and in emergencies with hot fat or water.
Material & fibre blend
What lets the jacket withstand washing, heat and hand-feel
Sleeve & collar shape
How the jacket moves and looks at the pass
Pockets & functional details
Where thermometer, waiter's slip and notepad end up
The features determine daily handling on duty. The chest pocket is the classic for notepad and pen. The sleeve pocket with zip or pen slot is the professional standard for thermometer, HACCP card and order pad – accessible even with the bib closed. The interior change pocket in the back keeps the order pad dry and out of sight. The back vent provides extra freedom of movement when bending down to the combi steamer.
Colour code & corporate identity
What white, black and colour mean in the guest's eyes
The colour choice communicates the kitchen concept before the first plate reaches the table. White remains the classic for cleanliness, order and traditional cuisine and is the most HACCP-friendly choice because soiling becomes visible immediately. Black is the modern fine-dining colour – robust-looking against stains, serious, current. The white-and-black combination dominates with 18 of 61 models and is the standard compromise between classic and modern. Coloured models (blue, red, green shades) are the CI tool for chains and concept kitchens.
Six ways to the right chef jacket
Whether starred restaurant, canteen chain or organic bakery – here are the curated combinations of closure, material, sleeve and brand that work in the daily kitchen.
Fine-dining classic with mandarin collar
Long sleeve with classic double-button row, Mandarin collar for a quiet fine-dining look, 65/35 blend for industrial laundering up to 95 °C. White/black combo as the standard colour choice. Ideal for starred restaurants, hotel restaurants and representation.
Canteen standard with press-stud changeover
Press-stud closure for quick handling in case of soiling, 65/35 blend for 95 °C wash in the internal HACCP cycle, CI colours available. Ideal for canteens, hospitals, school canteens and restaurant chains with high laundry frequency.
Bakery & patisserie with pure cotton
100% Cotton instead of poly-blend – does not melt on contact with hot oven doors, ages with character, natural hand. Washable at 60 °C, classic colours white and black. For artisan bakery, patisserie and open bakery.
Organic restaurant & sustainability communication
Recycled Polyester (Karlowsky Green-Generation) or Lyocell blend (CGW GreeNature/Turin) – certified sustainable, fitted with elastic back panel, muted colour palette. For organic restaurants, sustainably positioned hotels and chains with an environmental story.
Front cooking & show kitchen with safety closure
Poppers snap or concealed press-stud placket – opens in one motion, the jacket can be removed in seconds. Quiet look without visible closure details for guest contact. For front cooking, show kitchen, cooking classes and food truck.
Street food, food truck & craft restaurant
Jeans style with visible topstitching, denim look or a coloured base tone – the models that make a deliberate statement against the fine-dining classic. For street-food concepts, food-truck chains, craft restaurants and modern show kitchens.

Which fabric, which cut?
Not every material and not every cut suits every project. Here you will find the right combination.
65% Polyester / 35% Cotton
Heat protection and chef-jacket closure safety
The safety component of a professional chef jacket lies in the closure: classic double button rows and press studs keep grease and water splashes off the underlying shirt, the hidden poppers-snap placketi (Karlowsky Noah KY102) allows the entire front to be opened in seconds in an emergency. Together with the heat-resistant 100% Cottoni material (KY007, KY009) and the sleeve pocket for thermometer and HACCP card (Exner EX200), this forms the safety toolkit for front cooking, grill station and hot pass service.
Grease and splash repellency

All about Chef jackets
The clear answer depends on the material: 65/35 polyester-cotton blends (38 of 61 models in the range) are approved for 95 °C industrial laundering and are chlorine-tolerant – the standard for any business with an external textile service or in-house laundry running the EN 15797 process. 100% Cottoni models such as KY007 or KY009 are designed for 60 °C and therefore retain their soft feel; at 95 °C they shrink and yellow more quickly. Lyocelli blends such as CGW03680/CGW03685 we recommend washing at 60 °C. If your business needs to work in a HACCP-compliant manner and maintains a central laundry cycle, strictly choose the 65/35 blend – it is the only answer for 95 °C plus chlorine bleaching plus 200+ wash cycles without loss of shape.
White and black stand for the two great kitchen codes: white signals cleanliness, order and traditional cuisine and is HACCP-friendly, because any soiling is immediately visible and the jacket can be changed before guest contact. Black is the modern fine-dining code - serious, contemporary and visually robust against small splashes. The white-black combination (18 of 61 models) is the standard compromise between classic and modern for hotel restaurants and upmarket hospitality. Coloured models in blue, red or green are the corporate-identity tool for restaurant chains and concept kitchens - Karlowsky Lars/Gustav and CG Workwear Turin Classic cover up to six base colours per model and can be matched precisely to your corporate identity.
For a 100% identical appearance with gender-specific fit we offer several model pairs: Karlowsky KY070 (Women Larissa) and KY038 (Basic) in the white-and-black standard cut, KY071 (Women Greta) and KY036 (Men Lars), CG Workwear CGW3100 (Men Turin Classic) and CGW3105 (Women Turin tailored) in six colours. For sustainably positioned establishments the Green Generation family with KY051 (Men) plus KY134 (Women) long-sleeved and KY052 plus KY135 short-sleeved. All pairs share identical colours, closures and details – the women's models are merely cut tailored with adjusted chest width and hip rounding. For kitchen teams with a purely unisexi approach (30 models), the gender-neutral standard cuts are sufficient.
Karlowsky (19 models) is the German hospitality classic with the broadest range depth – from the Basic series through Green-Generation to the jeans-style trend. The right choice for operations that want to kit out all positions from head chef to prep worker from one brand family. Premier Workwear (11 models) is the British-professional fine-dining specialist with Coolchecker® technology and Mandarin-collar classics. CG Workwear (11 models) is the budget-friendly alternative with a strong colour palette and the Turin Classic range. Le Chef (9 models) focuses on premium positioning for Michelin-starred restaurants and upscale hotels. Dennys London (4 models) is the traditional British classic with an artisan look. Exner (3 models) rounds out the range with German classic models such as the chef jacket with a sleeve pocket. For organic and craft concepts, Karlowsky Green-Generation and CGW GreeNature are worth a look.
Kids chef jackets are not regularly in the range – for chef jackets we focus on professional hospitality kit from adult sizes XS/S upwards. For cookery events, kids cookery courses, show kitchens with a junior programme or family hospitality, please contact us directly: we will advise on suitable alternatives from the childrenswear range (e.g. fitted XS models for teens from 14 years) or on special orders from the brand manufacturers. For regular team kit in a hospitality operation, the standard cuts from XS to 4XL are sufficient – the 30 men's, 12 women's and 19 unisexi models reliably cover the relevant sizes.
As a rule of thumb for the initial fit-out: five chef jackets per full-time kitchen employee – two on the body (one in service, one as a change if soiled), two in the wash and one in reserve. For operations with an external laundry cycle and a two-day wash cycle, three to four jackets are enough. For front-cooking positions with high soiling risk, plan for six to seven jackets. Important for the calculation: choose the same brand, same model, same colour – so you can easily reorder and the team look stays uniform, even if you expand the team in two years. Karlowsky, CG Workwear and Premier Workwear supply the same models stably over years – good for team-uniform concepts that are meant to last.
