Bluesign®
Also known as: Bluesign system, Bluesign approved
Swiss process certification strictly assessing the entire textile value chain for resource efficiency, consumer and worker safety and emissions.
Description
Bluesign® is a certification system founded in 2000 in St. Gallen (Switzerland) and considered one of the strictest in the textile industry. Unlike OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100, which only tests the end product, Bluesign® is a process certification: it covers the whole production from raw material via dyes, chemicals and intermediates to the finished textile.
Core of the system is the Bluefinder, a dynamic database of more than 30,000 approved chemicals and dyes. Only substances from this list may be used in bluesign-certified operations. The standard is based on five principles: resource productivity, consumer safety, water emissions, air emissions and occupational safety.
Three certificate levels exist: bluesign® SYSTEM PARTNER (brands, chemistry and factory partners), bluesign® APPROVED (individual materials) and bluesign® PRODUCT (end products with at least 90 % bluesign-approved materials). Well-known brands include Patagonia, Vaude, Mammut, Adidas and Nike. Bluesign® is especially widespread in technical outdoor and sports, where synthetic fibres and coatings dominate.
