Cradle to Cradle Certified®
Also known as: C2C, Cradle-to-Cradle
Holistic circular certification system that designs products so all components can be fully reused in either biological or technical cycles.
Description
The Cradle to Cradle Certified® programme is based on the eponymous book (2002) by German chemist Michael Braungart and US architect William McDonough. Central idea: products must not become "waste" but must be designed so every component can be composted as biological nutrient or endlessly reused as technical nutrient - as opposed to the linear "cradle-to-grave" model.
Certification is issued by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute (Amsterdam / San Francisco) and assesses five categories: material health, material reutilisation, renewable energy, water stewardship and social fairness. Each category awards five levels: Basic, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum. The overall certificate matches the lowest single rating.
In textiles Trigema (compostable T-shirt), Wolford and C&A with C2C organic-cotton shirts have become well-known. The challenge is the biological cycle: the end product including sewing thread, labels and prints must be compostable - which rules out many conventional inputs.
