Certification of textile materials to Cradle-to-Cradle principles v4 (2021) — assessed across five categories and four levels.
Description
Cradle to Cradle Certified Version 4.0 (published 03/2021, mandatory from 07/2022) is a circular-economy standard by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. For textiles the standard evaluates five performance categories:
- Material Health — every chemical is screened against the C2C exclusion list (RSL + optimised for biological or technical cycles)
- Product Circularity — can the product be returned to a cycle?
- Clean Air & Climate Protection — carbon footprint, renewable energy
- Water & Soil Stewardship — water quality, consumption, soil protection
- Social Fairness — ILO core labour standards, living wage
Each category is scored on four levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum. The lowest achieved level determines the overall certification. Textile manufacturers such as Trigema (Cradle-to-Cradle T-shirt), Rohner (Climatex), Puma (InCycle) and Kvadrat use the standard to certify compostable or fully recyclable products.
