Garments individually cut from bulk fabric and sewn - as opposed to catalogue blank textiles. Allows fully custom silhouettes, designs and brand details.
Description
Cut & Sew describes both the process and the resulting garments: clothes are individually cut from bulk fabric and fully made-up in a sewing factory. The starting point is a custom pattern, either from an existing customer sketch or developed in cooperation with a designer. The fabric may be woven, knitted, printed (including all-over sublimation) or dyed.
Cut & Sew is the opposite of blank textiles, where a finished T-shirt is bought from a catalogue and only decorated (printed or embroidered). Advantages of cut & sew are unlimited design freedom (custom fit, panels in different colours, hidden seams, special labels) and a more premium brand impression. Drawbacks are higher minimum quantities (typically 300 - 500 pieces per style), longer lead times (8 - 16 weeks instead of 3 - 5 days) and significantly higher unit cost.
Cut & Sew is standard in fashion labels, corporate sports uniforms (jerseys) and streetwear brands, while promotional-goods textiles run almost exclusively as blank articles.
