Description

The Fair Labor Association (FLA) is a non-profit founded in 1999 in Washington DC that grew out of the Clinton-era Apparel Industry Partnership initiative and now brings together brands, universities and civil-society organisations as a multi-stakeholder body. Historically strong in the sports goods industry: Nike was a founding member after the sweatshop scandals of the 1990s; today Adidas, Puma, Patagonia, Fruit of the Loom and Fossil are also affiliated.

The basis is the FLA Workplace Code of Conduct, mirroring the ILO core standards: prohibition of forced and child labour, freedom of association, no discrimination, no harassment or abuse, healthy and safe workplaces, living wages, maximum working hours and legally binding employment. Brands go through an accreditation process; their supplier factories are audited on a sample basis by accredited external auditors and reports are published anonymously in the FLA Fair Factories Clearinghouse database. This makes FLA one of the few initiatives providing public transparency at factory level.
