GOTS - Global Organic Textile Standard
Also known as: Global Organic Textile Standard
Leading global standard for organic textiles with strict ecological and social requirements along the entire supply chain from raw material to end product.
Description
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) was established in 2006 by four certifiers (IVN, Soil Association, OTA, JOCA) and is now the strictest and most widely known organic textile standard worldwide. It sets requirements along the entire supply chain: fibre cultivation, processing, dyeing, making-up, trade and labelling.
The core rule concerns fibre content: only products with at least 70 % certified organic natural fibres may be labelled "made with organic", while the label "organic" requires at least 95 %. The remaining fibres are subject to a positive list (certain regenerated and recycled fibres are allowed, conventional cotton is not).
Chemical requirements prohibit GMOs, chlorine bleach, formaldehyde, aromatic amines and PVC. In addition processing sites must have wastewater treatment. Socially GOTS requires compliance with the eight ILO core labour standards (ban on child and forced labour, freedom of association, non-discrimination, living wages). Every site is audited annually on-site; a GOTS end product carries the logo, licence number and certifier name.
