Also known as: Harmonized System, Tariff code, HTS
Globally uniform six-digit goods nomenclature by the World Customs Organization (WCO, Brussels) for customs classification — textiles fall in chapters 50-63; EU sub-classifications CN and TARIC go up to 10 digits.
Description
The HS Code (Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System, in short Harmonized System) is a standardised, six-digit international goods nomenclature managed by the World Customs Organization (WCO, based in Brussels). Introduced in 1988 and updated every five years (current version: HS 2022), it is the basis of every customs declaration. More than 200 countries apply it; it covers about 98 % of world trade.
Textiles and apparel fall in HS chapters 50 to 63: 50 silk, 51 wool and fine animal hair, 52 cotton, 53 other vegetable fibres (linen, hemp, jute), 54 synthetic and artificial filaments, 55 synthetic and artificial staple fibres, 56 wadding/felts/nonwovens, 57 carpets, 58 special fabrics, 59 impregnated fabrics, 60 knitted and crocheted fabrics, 61 knitted/crocheted apparel, 62 non-knitted apparel, 63 other made-up textile articles. Examples: 6109.10 = cotton knitted t-shirts; 6205.20 = cotton non-knitted shirts. In the EU the 6 HS digits are followed by the Combined Nomenclature (CN, 8-digit) and the TARIC (10-digit) containing duties, anti-dumping duties and restrictions.
