Independent testing system for leather and leather articles regarding harmful substances — the leather counterpart of STANDARD 100.
Description
LEATHER STANDARD by OEKO-TEX® is a globally uniform independent testing and certification system for leather and fur articles at all processing stages — from semi-finished wet blue to finished garments, shoes or furniture upholstery. Split off from STANDARD 100 in 2017 because leather has entirely different chemical profiles due to chrome tanning, fat-liquoring and finishing.
Testing covers more than 1,000 regulated substances including chromium VI (suspected carcinogen), formaldehyde, AZO dyes, PCP, pesticides, plasticizers and PFC. Limit values follow four product classes reflecting skin contact (class I baby articles = strictest). Certificates are valid for one year and must be renewed annually. Important: like STANDARD 100, LEATHER STANDARD says nothing about animal welfare, tannery effluents or social conditions — that requires MADE IN GREEN or additional labels such as LWG.
