Unisex
Also known as: gender-neutral, genderless
Term for garments intentionally cut in a gender-neutral way and wearable by men and women - standard for T-shirts, hoodies and corporate wear.
Description
Unisex clothing is cut to fit both men and women. The cut mostly follows the straight men's model (broader shoulders, longer body, no waist shape) but is offered in a slightly wider size grid (XS - 3XL) to cover women's sizes as well. Classic unisex categories are T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, polo shirts, poncho-style rain jackets, bathrobes and basics such as socks and beanies.
For promotional textiles, club and company wear, unisex is the standard: it reduces sourcing complexity because only one size line has to be stocked and is inclusive because non-binary people as well as very slim men and larger women are covered. Downside is the less figure-hugging fit - for tailored women's silhouettes one has to switch to explicit "ladies" or "women's" styles.
In fashion, unisex has enjoyed a second heyday since the 2010s through brands like COS, Uniqlo and many streetwear labels, often paired with oversized silhouettes. Important for sellers: publish a clear size chart - unisex cuts usually run one size larger for women than a women's cut.
