Description
Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP) is a non-profit organisation founded in 2000 in Arlington, Virginia, certifying sewing factories in the apparel, footwear and textile industries worldwide on social and legal compliance. Certification is based on twelve principles: compliance with laws, ban on forced and child labour, compensation per local law, working hours, no harassment or abuse, non-discrimination, health and safety, freedom of association, environment, customs, security and anti-terrorism compliance.
WRAP issues three certificate levels: Platinum (valid three years, for facilities with exemplary track record), Gold (two years, standard) and Silver (six months, for minor deviations). Audits are conducted by accredited monitors and include document review, factory walk-through and worker interviews.
Critics point out that WRAP is co-funded by the US apparel industry and historically seen as "industry-driven" — requirements on living wages or freedom of association are weaker than Fair Wear. Still WRAP is mandatory in many US brand supply chains (Walmart, Gap, Target) and widely used worldwide.
