Voluminous sleeve that puffs strongly between shoulder and wrist and is gathered at the bottom.
Description
The balloon sleeve is a particularly voluminous sleeve that puffs strongly from the armhole down to the wrist and is gathered into a close cuff or elasticated band at the wrist. In contrast to the short puff sleeve, the balloon sleeve is usually long; in contrast to the trumpet sleeve, the width is not left open at the wrist but pulled together.
Balloon sleeves make a statement and are readily used on feminine blouses, dresses and knitted pullovers. For the full puff effect the sleeve needs a lot of fabric width, which is either gathered or worked with pleats into the armhole and cuff. They were particularly popular in the Renaissance and 1980s and have been trending again since the late 2010s.
