Boat neck
Also known as: Bateau neckline
Neckline that runs flat from shoulder to shoulder in the shape of a boat hull.
Description
The boat neck, French bateau and German U-Boot-Ausschnitt, runs in a flat, slightly curved line horizontally from shoulder point to shoulder point. The neckline usually reaches a few centimetres below the base of the neck in front and drops similarly at the back, so that the collarbones and upper chest area remain visible while the shoulders stay largely covered.
The neckline originates from the French naval uniform of the 19th century – the legendary marinière striped shirt still carries this neckline today. It visually elongates the neck and forms a classic look with horizontal stripes.
