Cutaway collar
Also known as: Shark collar
Very widely spread collar for voluminous tie knots like the full Windsor.
Description
The cutaway collar, also known as the shark collar, is the most extreme variant among classic shirt collars. Its spread angle exceeds 90 degrees and can reach 180 degrees so the points point almost horizontally outwards. Point length at 6 to 7.5 cm is a little shorter than on the Kent because otherwise the points would extend too far past the shoulders.
The cutaway was specifically developed for the full Windsor knot, whose large triangular volume requires a wide collar opening. The half Windsor and Kelvin knot also work perfectly. Without a tie the cutaway looks very open and modern; it shows a lot of neck and is considered particularly elegant in Italy and in British bespoke.
Structurally the wide angle demands a particularly stable interlining so the points do not buckle. Collar stays are mandatory. The band measures 3.5 to 4.5 cm.
The cutaway suits formal business and evening shirts, occasions such as weddings or representative appointments. Compared to the Kent it is less versatile in everyday wear but stylistically more expressive. The Italian collar is very similar but usually less extreme.
