Silhouette with a fitted upper body up to the waist and a distinctly flared skirt — flattering to the hourglass shape.
Description
Fit-and-flare is one of the key silhouettes for womenswear: bodice and waist sit close to the body, from the waist down the skirt flares out in a clear bell shape (typical opening angle 40–70°). Similar to the A-line but with a much stronger waist emphasis.
Widely used for day dresses, cocktail dresses, wedding skater-style dresses and belted winter coats. Good materials: medium-weight wool jerseys, ottoman, punto di Milano or high-count poplin. It is commonly paired with a round neckline and knee-length or midi skirt. Advantage: flatters both hourglass and pear shapes because the flare visually balances the hips.
