Kent collar

The Kent collar is the classic among shirt collars and by far the most widespread shape in Germany. It is characterised by points of about 7 to 9 cm in length and a spread angle of around 60 to 75 degrees. The collar points angle slightly forward and downward, so the collar looks pleasing both with and without a tie.

Structurally, the Kent collar consists of an upper and lower collar with a stiffening interlining of fusible or woven cotton, which provides the characteristic stand. Removable or sewn-in collar stays of plastic or metal are often integrated to keep the points smooth and stable. The collar band typically measures 3 to 4 cm.

Compact tie knots such as the four-in-hand or the small Windsor pair well with the Kent collar. The spread angle is too narrow for the full Windsor knot, which requires a wider collar like a shark or cutaway. The Kent collar is standard for business shirts, everyday shirts and classic casual shirts.

Compared to the New Kent, the classic Kent is cut somewhat narrower. The New Kent has a wider spread and looks more modern. The cutaway is even more open and specifically designed for large tie knots.
