Kimono collar
Also known as: Shawl-like collar
Flat draping collar with continuous front piece in the style of the Japanese kimono.
Description
The kimono collar is a nod to the Japanese kimono and features a wide-cut collar that runs from the neck down to the front closing edge. It has neither a point construction nor a folding band in the classic sense, but consists of an elongated piece of fabric worn V-shaped or crossed on the body.
Structurally the kimono collar is simple: two strips of fabric are attached at the neckline and led down over the chest, often with a tie belt or wrap closure. The collar is soft, without interlining, and looks flowing and draped.
The kimono collar is often found on blouses and women's shirts with oriental or wrap look, on bathrobes, homewear collections and Japanese-inspired streetwear. Modern jackets sometimes use kimono-like collars as an alternative to classic lapels.
Compared to the classic shawl collar, the kimono collar is less structured and looks more relaxed. It suits soft, fluid fabrics like viscose, silk or lightweight cotton. It is unusual for business outfits; in casual and loungewear as well as in women's fashion it is very common.
