Loose fit
Also known as: Wide fit
Deliberately wide, loosely draping fit with clearly more volume than regular fit.
Description
The loose fit is a deliberately wide-cut, loosely draping fit with clearly more volume than regular or casual fit. Chest, waist and sleeve widths are generous, often with 6 to 12 cm more circumference than regular fit. Loose fit expresses a fashionable preference for relaxed silhouettes or serves as a comfortable standard for wearers with more voluminous stature.
Structurally the loose fit uses straight, wide-cut side seams, lowered sleeve seams (drop shoulder), long front and back panels and generous cuffs. On blouses it is often combined with fluid materials such as viscose or modal to emphasise the relaxed drape.
Loose fit is typical of streetwear, oversized trends, home-office blouses, boyfriend shirts and loungewear. It looks relaxed, youthful and current but is less suitable for formal business. In women's fashion it produces wrap blouses, tunic blouses and boyfriend shirts. In menswear it appears on streetwear T-shirts and relaxed shirts.
Compared to casual fit loose is clearly wider and more relaxed. Compared to boxy fit or oversized, loose is still proportioned – oversize deliberately goes beyond one's own size, whereas loose fit keeps the wearer's size but drapes wide.
