Mitred V-neck

The mitred V-neck refers to a V-shaped neckline whose ribbed neckband meets at the point with a precise mitred seam. Instead of a folded or rounded transition the two halves of the band form a clean 45-degree angle that meets in a crisp V.

Structurally the mitred V demands considerable precision: the two rib strips must be cut at exactly the right angle and joined with a stitched seam so that the V remains symmetrical and neat. This technique is regarded as a mark of quality on premium T-shirts and sweaters.

The mitred V is typical of classic men's sweatshirts (such as the Champion Reverse Weave), of premium merino baselayers and of knitted pullovers. It prevents the annoying stretching-out of the V-point and gives the neckline a lastingly clean shape. Cheap T-shirts often use a simple folded V instead, which stretches out faster.

Compared to a classic V-neck the mitred V is more precise and more durable. Compared to the scoop neck it is more distinctive and formal.
