Jacket collar with a visible notch between the top collar and the ascending lapel.
Description
The notched lapel collar is the standard collar on classic jackets, blazers and suit coats. It consists of a folded-over top collar and an ascending lapel, separated by a triangular or diamond-shaped notch. The notch angle is usually 75 to 90 degrees; the flatter the notch, the more restrained the look.
The notched lapel developed in the late 19th century from the turnover shirt collar of the frock coat and is today the everyday jacket collar. Alongside the notch lapel there are the peak lapel for more formal wear and the shawl collar for tuxedo and smoking jackets.
