Puff sleeve
Also known as: Puffed sleeve
Short or three-quarter sleeve, gathered into a narrow band at both top and bottom.
Description
The puff sleeve is a short, three-quarter or full-length sleeve gathered into the armhole at the top and into a band or cuff at the bottom. The excess fabric width forms a puffed shape in between. Historically the puff sleeve was fashionable in the Renaissance and the Victorian era, whose extreme forms even used sleeve supports made of horsehair or wire.
Today the puff sleeve is again a trend element on feminine blouses and dresses – and a classic for wedding and children's wear. Puff height varies widely, from lightly gathered to extremely voluminous statement sleeves. Light, shape-holding fabrics such as poplin, taffeta or woven cotton are usually used.
