Retail fit
Also known as: Retail standard fit
Standard fit optimised for retail with tolerant size interpretation.
Description
Retail fit describes a fit tailored to the requirements of general retail: it should fit as many customers as possible, cause few returns and work without lengthy fitting. The silhouette is rather generous, the pattern cutting tolerant. Back and chest widths are laid out so that both slim and slightly fuller wearers of the same confection size are served.
Structurally retail fit follows neither a strict slim nor a classic regular cut. It tends toward a generous regular fit with a subtle hint of tapering. Sleeves are cut normally, cuffs have two adjustment buttons to serve different wrists. The collar is tolerantly proportioned and harmonises with different neck shapes.
Retail fit is typical of fast-fashion chains, department stores and discounters. It targets a broad audience looking for a solid basic product without fit specification. For formal business or body-hugging fashion looks it is less suitable because the silhouette is not clearly defined.
Compared to regular fit retail is often even more generously cut. Compared to tailor fit it lacks tailoring precision. It is a compromise between accuracy and universality – good for retail, not always optimal for the individual wearer.
