Description

Slim fit refers to a body-hugging, tight cut noticeably slimmer than the classic regular fit. On a slim-fit shirt, chest, waist and sleeve widths are perceptibly reduced; the silhouette follows body contours without constricting. The confection difference between chest and waist circumference is often 14 to 18 cm for slim fit versus 8 to 12 cm for regular fit.

Structurally the slim fit is achieved by darted back panels, narrower side seams and slimmer sleeves. Sleeves end with tighter cuffs, the collar is often one size smaller. On shirts back darts are typical, on jackets a tapered cut and narrower lapels.

Slim fit suits slim to normal body shapes best. On more voluminous wearers the fabric strains at chest and belly, which looks unflattering and reduces comfort. Slim fit has shaped modern menswear since the 2000s and is standard on business shirts with a youthful ambition.

Compared to regular fit slim is noticeably tighter; compared to fitted or extra slim it is a little more generous. Beyond slim fit are models like super slim or skinny fit with an even more tapered silhouette.
