Sweetheart neckline
Also known as: Heart neckline
Neckline shaped like a rounded heart, classic on evening dresses.
Description
The sweetheart neckline forms the curved upper edge of a stylised heart: two rounded curves run down from the straps to the centre of the chest and meet there in a soft dip or point. The neckline emphasises décolleté and bust in a feminine way without appearing improper.
Structurally the sweetheart neckline needs a well-fitted bust support with cups, underwire or corsetry to stay stable. It is used mainly on evening dresses, cocktail dresses, wedding gowns and ball gowns, more rarely on blouses or tops. It became famous in the 1930s through Hollywood film costumes and has been a classic of romantic silhouettes ever since.
