Turtleneck

The turtleneck is a high, mostly stretchy knitted collar that surrounds the entire neck and is typically folded once outward. It emerged in late 19th-century Britain as sportswear for golf and field sports and became standard maritime workwear in the early 1900s. The British Royal Navy still issues wool turtlenecks to submarine crews.

From the 1950s onward the turtleneck became a fashion statement among students and in haute couture; the Beatles wore it as a group look on the cover of With The Beatles. Woody Allen made the black turtleneck an icon of the intellectual.
