Bio-based DWR

Water-repellent finish based on plant-derived raw materials — completely PFAS-free, compostable residual chemistry, modern alternative to C6/C0 DWR.
Description
Bio-based DWR (bio-based durable water repellent) replaces fluorinated and paraffin-based repellents with plant-derived waxes, oils and polymers – typically from rapeseed, cotton residues, potato starch, chitosan or cellulose-based nano-structures. Prominent systems include OrganoTex, ecorepel Bio and Rudolf Group's BIONIC-FINISH ECO BIO.
Unlike C6 DWR, bio-based DWR is free of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and unlike classic C0 (silicone/paraffin) it is at least partially biodegradable. Water contact angles are typically 130–150°, spray rating (ISO 4920) reaches 4–5 immediately after application and 3–4 after 5–10 washes – comparable to modern C0. Regular refreshment is required. Important: bio-based DWR only repels water and not (or much less) oil, grease or ground soil, so it is unsuitable for heavily soiled workwear. Target segments: outdoor apparel, leisure rain wear, children's clothing, sustainability-focused corporate wear.
