Garment-washed look (enzyme washed)
Also known as: Enzyme-washed look, Pre-washed vintage feel, Cellulase wash finish
Softly worn, vintage look on the finished garment created by cellulase enzyme washing.
Description
The garment-washed look is a fashion and technical finishing effect applied to the fully made-up garment: instead of raw fabric, the finished item (t-shirt, sweat, shirt, chino, bathrobe) is treated in industrial drum washers with cellulase enzymes. The enzymes selectively attack protruding cotton cellulose fibre ends and nibble them off in gentle 30-60 minute cycles at 40-55 degrees and pH 4.5-6. The result is a noticeably softer, smoother surface with subtle colour lightening and minimal shrinkage.
Typical batches run 40-200 items per drum (200-500 kg load). The vintage character is enhanced by adding small amounts of pumice (stone-enzyme wash), ozone (Jeanologia G2) or coconut-shell pearls (E-Flow) - producing soft creases, minor distortion and an immediate worn-in feel without the stiff hand of new goods. Compared to classic stone wash, enzyme wash saves 40-60 percent water and generates less chemical wastewater.
For garment manufacturers the look solves three problems at once: (1) pre-shrinking reduces after-shrink in home washing to below 3 percent (versus 5-8), (2) the hand is 'favourite-tee soft' straight out of the pack, (3) the product looks premium. Downsides: a surcharge of 1.20-3.50 euros per t-shirt and a slightly uneven colour appearance. Major equipment suppliers include Tonello, Jeanologia, Tolkar, Sperotto Rimar. ZDHC-compliant enzymes come from Novozymes and AB Enzymes.
