Low-twist yarn
Also known as: Soft-twist yarn
Yarn with reduced twist for maximum soft hand and voluminous appearance.
Description
Low-twist yarn is a ring-spun yarn with markedly reduced twist compared to standard yarns. While classic cotton yarns are spun with a twist multiplier alpha of 3.8-4.2, low twist works with alpha 2.8-3.4. The lower twist lets the fibres lie more loosely; the yarn appears more voluminous, softer and heavier but loses some strength.
Main application is premium terry towels and bed linen: low-twist goods absorb water faster and feel significantly softer in the hand. Sport T-shirts and baby basics also use low twist to achieve a soft, skin-friendly hand. Downside is lower rub and wash resistance; the fabric tends to pill and must be washed gently.
For stable finished products low-twist yarns are often processed as secondary doubled or twisted constructions. A current example is Vidalia (Cotton Council International) for silky towels and Pima Cotton low-twist for high-end womenswear. Use requires careful yarn choice and processing in weaving or knitting because the yarn is more sensitive to mechanical stress.
