Moulinated yarn
Also known as: Mouline yarn
Twist yarn from two or more differently coloured single yarns creating a shading thread appearance.
Description
Moulinated yarn is a twisted yarn made from two or more single yarns of different colours plied together. Unlike melange (fibre blend in the same yarn), on moulinated the single yarns remain visibly distinguishable because they spiral around the common axis. The effect: a helically alternating, distinctly shading thread appearance whose contrast can range from soft to strong.
Classic application is hand embroidery yarn (DMC Mouliné) made of six single cotton threads. For weaving and knitting yarn the effect is used in sport and fashion articles like two-tone twisted men's sweaters, sport polos with a vintage look or check fabrics. Contrast choice from tone-in-tone (light grey + dark grey) to complementary (blue + orange) defines the visual character.
Production is on twisting machines: single yarns from different colour bobbins run together and are twisted at a defined rate. The twists per metre determine visibility of the effect: few twists give long colour segments and a striking look, many twists a compact, almost melange-like impression. Moulinated yarns are more durable and pill-resistant than single yarn.
