Pigment dyed
Also known as: Pigment coloured
Garment given a vintage look with soft hand and fading colours by pigment dye.
Description
Pigment dyed describes garments whose colour has been produced by the pigment dye process. Characteristic are a slightly shaded, uneven-looking colour, an especially soft hand from binder-integrated softeners and a deliberate fading effect that grows with each wash. The typical vintage look with light edges on collar, cuff and seams is intended and defines the design.
In practice pigment-dyed T-shirts and sweats are treated as ready-made goods in the washer in a garment-dye process: pigment-binder solution in the bath, added over hours, then heat cured in the tumbler at 150 degrees. A short enzyme wash for extra softness is often added afterwards.
Important care: pigment dye can bleed noticeably in the first three to five washes, so wash separately. Cold water (max 30 degrees) and mild detergents extend colour stability. Pigment dyeing is the typical colour option for premium basics brands like Buck Mason, Vintage Industries or Jungmaven.
