EN 1149-5

EN 1149-5, together with EN 1149-3, covers the electrostatic properties of protective clothing worn in explosive atmospheres (ATEX). The aim is to prevent electrostatic charging of the wearer and ignition-capable discharges, especially in gas, dust or mist atmospheres (refineries, mills, paint shops, silos). Part 5 defines performance requirements for material and construction while part 1 tests surface resistance, part 2 vertical resistance and part 3 charge decay (half decay time t50 below 4 s or shielding factor S above 0.2). The garment must be worn fully closed, use dissipative material covering the skin, and be connected to ground via shoes or bonding lead. The standard alone does not eliminate ignition sources; it always applies within a zone concept. PPE category II or III in explosive areas.
