Standard for cold protective clothing below -5 C; measures Icler insulation, air permeability and optional water tightness.
Description
EN 342:2017 covers clothing systems and single garments for protection against cold below -5 C, typically for cold stores, winter construction, outdoor logistics and offshore work. Mandatory parameters are effective thermal insulation Icler in m2K/W (classes B, C and X, where 1 clo equals about 0.155 m2K/W) and air permeability in three classes 1 to 3 (class 3 = lowest permeability, best wind protection). Water tightness is tested optionally per EN 343 or EN ISO 20811 and shown as WP or omitted. Cold protection systems are measured as a whole because insulation depends on layering: base layer, fleece and outer shell together deliver the Icler value. It is PPE category II and is complemented by EN 14058 for lighter cold down to -5 C.
