Standard for foul-weather clothing; grades water resistance and vapor permeability in 4 classes each.
Description
EN 343 sets the requirements for foul-weather clothing against rain, snow and fog. Two key figures apply: water resistance (X, class 1-4 per EN ISO 811 hydrostatic head) and water vapour permeability (Y, class 1-4 per EN ISO 11092 RET). Class 4 in both means top performance: RET below 15 for Y and above 20 kPa for X. Class 3 fits classic membrane rain shells, class 1 covers simple PVC ponchos. Editions from 2019 add a rain-shower simulation (R). Marking is a rain pictogram with X/Y ratings. EN 343 is often combined with EN ISO 20471 hi-vis and EN 342 cold. It falls under PPE cat. I or II depending on risk, certified under Regulation (EU) 2016/425.
