EN 388:2016+A1:2018
Also known as: glove standard mechanical risks
Standard for gloves against mechanical risks; six-digit code abrasion, cut, tear, puncture, TDM cut, impact.
Description
EN 388:2016+A1:2018 covers gloves against mechanical risks in PPE categories II and III. The hammer pictogram carries up to six characters: A abrasion (performance 0-4, Martindale cycles), B cut in the coup test (0-5), C tear (0-4), D puncture (0-4), E cut per EN ISO 13997 (TDM test, levels A to F, Newtons to cut-through) and F impact per EN 13594 (P if passed, else omitted). The 2016 revision introduced the TDM test because the classic coup test became unreliable on high-cut-resistant fibres due to blade dulling. The 2018 amendment refined measurement curves and boundary conditions. Fine assembly gloves typically read 3121X; cut protection gloves for glass and sheet metal reach e.g. 4X44D. Category II gloves are certified via EU type examination by a notified body.
