EN 71 toy safety
Also known as: toy safety standard
European standard series for toy safety; covers mechanics, chemistry, flammability and more.
Description
EN 71 is the European standard series for toy safety, applied under Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC. Key parts: EN 71-1 mechanical and physical requirements (edges, points, small parts), EN 71-2 flammability, EN 71-3 migration of certain elements (lead, cadmium, barium etc.), EN 71-9 organic chemicals. For soft toys and textile clothing for very young children, EN 14682 (cords) and OEKO-TEX 100 also apply. For workwear EN 71 is generally irrelevant but matters for promotional items, plush toys, baby bodysuits and fan merchandise. CE marking as a toy requires full conformity with every applicable EN 71 part; a textile responsible person must file a declaration of conformity with all test reports before first placing on the market. German market surveillance runs random EN 71 audits.
