EN ISO 13688
Also known as: general PPE clothing standard, base protective clothing standard
Base standard for protective clothing; covers ergonomics, sizing, ageing, compatibility and marking.
Description
EN ISO 13688 is the European base standard for protective clothing and is always applied together with a product-specific standard, never on its own. It sets cross-cutting requirements for ergonomics, harmlessness (pH, free formaldehyde, azo dyes), size designation per EN 13402, ageing, compatibility of multiple PPE items and marking and manufacturer information. The 2013 ISO base version has been updated by Amendment 1:2021 and is currently published as DIN EN ISO 13688:2022-04 (ISO 13688:2013 + A1:2021). Real protection performance only comes from a paired standard such as EN ISO 20471 (hi-vis), EN 343 (rain), EN 342 (cold) or EN ISO 11612 (heat/flame). For procurement, CE marking and PPE declarations of conformity under Regulation (EU) 2016/425, 13688 is the central framework standard.
