EN ISO 6529 – chemical permeation
Also known as: Chemical permeation test EN ISO 6529, Breakthrough time test
Test standard for chemical protective clothing — measures the time until a chemical diffuses through the material (breakthrough time, classes 1–6).
Description
EN ISO 6529 is the European test standard for the resistance of chemical protective clothing (CPC) against the permeation of liquids and gases. It measures the time until a defined test chemical diffuses through the protective material at a defined rate (typically 1 µg/(cm²·min)). This time is called breakthrough time and is split into six classes:
- Class 1: > 10 min
- Class 2: > 30 min
- Class 3: > 60 min
- Class 4: > 120 min
- Class 5: > 240 min
- Class 6: > 480 min
The standard underpins the type approval of PPE category III protective clothing (e.g. Type 1 gas-tight, Type 3 liquid-tight) and is applied together with EN 14325 (material tests) and the type-specific standards EN 943, EN 14605. Class classification must be proven per chemical in use.
