Gauge

Gauge (gg) in knitting states the number of needles per inch (25.4 mm) of the machine bed. Higher values mean finer needles and denser fabric. Typical: 3gg-7gg heavy sweaters and gloves, 10gg-14gg fine sweaters, 18gg-24gg jersey and socks. In safety gloves gauge drives dexterity and protection: 13gg cut-resistant gloves per EN 388 allow precise grip, while 7gg gloves are more rugged. Gauge is independent of yarn count; combined with yarn size (Nm, tex) it defines weight and hand. Rule of thumb: stitches/cm = gauge / 2.54. It is a trade convention, used consistently by Shima Seiki, Stoll and Terrot machines.
