ISO 105-E04 — Colour fastness to perspiration
Also known as: Perspiration fastness test, Sweat fastness test
Standard test measuring how much a textile colour bleeds or stains other fabrics under artificial perspiration.
Description
ISO 105-E04 tests colour fastness to perspiration — an essential parameter for garments worn close to the skin such as sportswear, workwear and underwear. The specimen is sandwiched between two standard multifibre adjacent fabrics, soaked in an acidic (pH 5.5) and an alkaline synthetic perspiration solution (pH 8), clamped under a defined pressure (12.5 kPa) in a perspirometer and stored at 37 °C for four hours.
After drying, colour change of the specimen and staining of the adjacent fabrics are evaluated against the grey scales (grade 1 = severe change to grade 5 = no change). Typical requirements are grade 4 or better. The test is usually run alongside ISO 105-C06 (wash fastness) and ISO 105-X12 (rubbing fastness) and is mandatory within OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100.
- Two test liquors: acidic (pH 5.5) and alkaline (pH 8)
- Rated on grey scales from 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent)
- Crucial for skin-contact garments, especially white workwear and sportswear
- Part of the OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 test scope
