ISO 105-X12 — Colour fastness to rubbing
Also known as: Crockmeter test, Dry/wet rub fastness textile, Rubbing fastness ISO 105-X12
Test standard for the transfer of textile colour under dry and wet rubbing using a crockmeter.
Description
ISO 105-X12 is part of the extensive ISO 105 series of colour fastness tests for textiles. In the crockmeter test a dry and a wet cotton rubbing cloth (50 x 50 mm) is rubbed under defined load (9 N) over the specimen for 10 cycles at 1 Hz.
After the test the rubbing cloth is graded against the grey scale (ISO 105-A03) in classes 1-5. 5 means no colour transfer, 1 means massive staining. The standard is the worldwide reference for all textiles with surface colouring (jeans, T-shirts, workwear, upholstery) and forms the basis of many buyer specifications, OEKO-TEX limits and complaint criteria — typical retail requirement: dry min. 4, wet min. 3.
- Test device: crockmeter (also available as AATCC 8 rig)
- Rubbing cloth: standardised cotton cloth per ISO 105-F09
- Complementary standards for denim: ISO 105-X16 (edge effects)
- Dry and wet values are always reported separately
