Description
ISO 11623 is the international standard for the periodic inspection of transportable composite gas cylinders — that is, pressure cylinders with an aluminium or plastic liner and a fibre-reinforced overwrap (glass, aramid or carbon fibre). Such cylinders are used in firefighter self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), in emergency rescue, mountain rescue, the military and in diving.
The standard sets out inspection scope, intervals, allowable damage classes (cuts, delamination, impact damage), marking, documentation and requirements for inspection bodies. For firefighter composite cylinders a 5-year re-inspection interval is typical (in Germany anchored in the ADR dangerous goods rules and the Ordinance on Industrial Safety). Together with the ISO 11119 standards (design and manufacturing requirements for composite cylinders) it forms the full life-cycle framework. From a textile perspective ISO 11623 is relevant because the overwrap is a fibre composite and the associated PPE (firefighter jacket, harness, straps) is closely linked with respiratory-protection textiles.
