ISO 11640 — Rub fastness of leather
Also known as: ISO 11640 rub test, Veslic test, Leather rub fastness
Test standard for the rub fastness of leather and coated surfaces using an oscillating felt pad.
Description
ISO 11640 (title: "Leather — Tests for colour fastness — Colour fastness to cycles of to-and-fro rubbing") defines how the rub fastness of leathers and leather-like coatings is tested in the laboratory. A standardised wool felt (Veslic felt, 15 x 15 mm) rubs linearly across the sample at a defined contact pressure (5 N or 9 N).
After a pre-defined number of rub cycles (typically 50 dry, 20 wet, 50 with synthetic perspiration) staining of the felt and colour change of the leather surface are graded visually against the grey scale in classes 1-5 (5 = no change). The standard is a mandatory test for automotive interiors, shoe upper leather, upholstery leather, leather protective clothing and gloves and is often specified together with ISO 105-X12.
- Test device: Veslic rub fastness tester
- Result: separate ratings for the leather side and the felt side
- Applicable to aniline leather, pigmented leather, PU/PVC coatings
- Binding limits are set in OEM specifications (automotive, aviation)
