ISO 13934 tensile strength
Also known as: strip tensile, grab tensile test
Test standard for tensile strength and elongation of fabrics; part 1 strip method, part 2 grab method.
Description
ISO 13934 is the central test standard for tensile properties of textile fabrics. Part 1 (ISO 13934-1) defines the strip tensile test: a rectangular strip of defined width (typically 50 mm) is pulled apart at constant elongation speed until it ruptures. Reported values are maximum tensile force in Newton and elongation at maximum force in percent. Part 2 (ISO 13934-2) defines the grab tensile test: only a central area of a wider sample is loaded between narrower jaws, so only the actually loaded yarns effectively bear load - the result is grab tensile strength. The strip test is European standard for woven and elastic fabrics; the grab test corresponds to US practice (ASTM D5034). Not applicable to nonwovens, geotextiles, glass fibre, PP tapes and carbon fibres - they have their own standards. In workwear supply specs values around 400-600 N in warp and weft are typical.
