ISO 6330 — Domestic washing and drying procedures for textile testing
Also known as: ISO 6330 washing procedure, Reference wash test
International standard defining exact household washing and drying procedures — the basis for shrinkage, colour and pilling tests.
Description
ISO 6330 (adopted as DIN EN ISO 6330) defines standardised household washing and drying procedures used to precondition textile specimens before further testing. It does not aim to reproduce consumer behaviour but to establish a reproducible reference programme — the only way to make test results comparable across labs, mills and retail chains.
The standard specifies washing-machine types (types A, B, C with defined drum volumes), reference detergents (per ISO 6330 or AATCC), water temperatures (20 to 92 °C), load, extra ballast and drying methods (line, flat, tumble drying). Most downstream textile tests build on it — dimensional change per ISO 5077, colour fastness per ISO 105-C06 or pilling per ISO 12945. For workwear the related ISO 15797 standard covers industrial laundering.
- Reference wash cycle serving as basis for many follow-up tests
- Specifies machines, detergents, temperatures and drying
- Simulates consumer laundering, not industrial washing
- Underpins claims like "max. 3 % shrinkage after 5 wash cycles"
