ISO 6941 - Flame spread of textiles
Also known as: ISO 6941 flame spread, EN ISO 6941
International standard measuring flame spread on vertically suspended textile specimens with a defined ignition flame — a core building block for protective and contract textiles.
Description
ISO 6941 (German version EN ISO 6941) describes the test procedure for measuring flame spread on vertically suspended textile specimens. A test piece (typically 200 × 160 mm) is clamped vertically in a test frame and ignited at its lower edge with a standardised butane/propane flame for 10 seconds. The time required for the flame to sever marker threads at defined heights is measured, and from this the flame spread rate is calculated in cm/s.
ISO 6941 is not a pass/fail classification but delivers a measured value used by follow-up standards (e.g. EN 1103 for leisure clothing, EN ISO 15025 for protective clothing, EN 13773 for curtains). Classifications such as “no flame spread” only become meaningful in conjunction with the relevant application standard. Typical use: assessment of contract textiles, workwear, protective clothing.
