YKK coil zipper
Also known as: spiral zipper, coil chain
Spiral zipper made from a continuously wound plastic filament; light, flexible and self-healing.
Description
The YKK coil zipper (also spiral zipper or YKK's CFC series) consists of a continuous plastic filament (usually polyester or nylon) tightly wound into a spiral and sewn onto the tape. Unlike Vislon or metal zippers the tooth heads are not moulded individually but formed by the spiral windings. Advantages: very light, extremely flexible, follows curves, cost-effective, available in fine sizes 3, 4, 5 (e.g. 3C, 5C) and often self-healing - if forced open on jammed windings they snap back cleanly on the next slide (Vislon or metal would be a repair or replacement case). Drawbacks: lower lateral tensile strength than metal, more sensitive to melting (iron). Coil is mainly used non-separating in trousers, dresses, cushion covers and bags, but separating versions exist for light jackets. As AquaGuard Coil also water-repellent.
