Chunky knit

Knit at low gauge (3-7 gauge) with thick yarn and visibly large stitches.
Description
Chunky knit refers to knitted fabric produced on flat-knitting machines at low gauge (3-7 gauge, i.e. 3-7 needles per inch) with correspondingly thick yarn. Typical yarn counts are Nm 2/6 to Nm 3/8, equivalent to 300-500 tex — much thicker than fine gauge knits (Nm 2/28-2/48).
The look is sculptural; every stitch is visible. Classic structures include stockinette, 2x2 rib, cable patterns and moss stitch. Materials: sheep wool, merino, alpaca, cotton, acrylic or alpaca-blend yarns. Weights range from 400 g/m² (wool knit) to 800 g/m² (chunky cashmere, Icelandic wool).
Chunky knits dominate autumn/winter collections in sweaters, classic Norwegian jumpers, fisherman knits, cardigans and heavy scarves. Brands such as Aran Sweater Market, Andersen-Andersen, Le Kilt and many Scandinavian labels focus on chunky knits. Care: hand wash 30 °C or wool cycle, dry flat, do not wring.
