Fine gauge knit
Also known as: Fine knit, High-gauge knit
Knit at high gauge (12-24 gauge) with thin yarn — smooth, fluid, business-suitable.
Description
Fine gauge knit refers to knitted fabric produced on flat-knitting machines at high gauge (12-24 gauge) using thin yarn (Nm 2/28 to Nm 2/48). The stitches are so small that the surface appears almost smooth — from a few metres away the fabric can look like a woven cloth. Classic structures: stockinette, jersey, 1×1 rib, moss stitch or half cardigan.
Materials: extrafine merino (17.5-19.5 μ), cashmere, cotton, modal-merino, mercerised cotton or wool-silk blends. Weights range from 180 to 320 g/m². The hand is smooth, supple and soft; the fabric drapes fluidly and hardly wrinkles. Thanks to the high stitch count fine gauge knit is timeless and reads as premium.
Fine gauge knit is the standard for business pullovers, merino long-sleeve tops, fine cardigans, classic V-necks and twin sets. Brands such as John Smedley, Sunspel, Uniqlo Merino and Boglioli specialise in this construction. Care: wool cycle 30 °C, dry flat, no fabric softener.
