French terry

Circular-knit sweat fabric with smooth face and open loop back, no brushing.
Description
French terry is a circular-knit construction in which small binding loops are formed on the back over additional needles while the face appears as smooth single jersey. Unlike classic sweatshirt fabric it is not brushed — the loops remain open, giving the typical structured inside. Circular machines run at 20-24 gauge.
Material is usually ring-spun cotton (Ne 20-30), often with 5-10% elastane for shape retention. Weights are 240-320 g/m², clearly below classic sweat (350-450 g/m²). This makes French terry ideal for transitional seasons, sports and yoga wear, and premium sweatshirts and hoodies with a modern light look.
Care: 30-40 °C, no fabric softener, medium tumble. Advantages over brushed sweat: faster drying, less pilling, modern urban look; the fabric stays air-permeable and comfortable in aerobic activities. Drawback: less insulation, so only a mid layer in winter.
